Study abroad offerings

Carl Sandburg College works in conjunction with the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP) to provide semester study abroad programs to Austria, China, England, Ireland and Spain, and summer study abroad opportunities to Austria, Costa Rica, Cuba, England, India, France and Spain.

Study abroad requirements

Students must meet the following requirements for these long-format programs:

  • 2.75 or higher GPA
  • B or better in English 101
  • 12 hours of earned college credit

 

Courses

Typically, two courses are offered for summer programs and four to five courses are offered for semester programs. Most programs include a culture course and/or a language course in addition to elective courses. For all programs requiring language study, no prior experience is required. If you have previous language experience, however, you'll be tested and placed in the appropriate courses. During your study abroad, you're registered as Carl Sandburg College students and receive course credit directly through the college.

 

Costs

Program costs vary by country. Most program costs include tuition abroad, housing (with host families when available), some meals, field trips and health insurance. Typically, you're required to pay for your airfare, passport and/or visa, some meals and personal expenses. For information on current program costs, visit ICISP or contact James Hutchings.

 

Application deadlines

Study abroad requires advanced planning to meet the deadlines:

  • Fall: May 15
  • Spring: October 15
  • Summer: February 15

 

Scholarship opportunities

Pell Grant recipients are eligible for summer study scholarships of up to $3,000 and semester study scholarships of up to $5,000. Plus, all Sandburg students are eligible for additional scholarships offered through Sandburg and ICISP. Please contact James Hutchings for application requirements and deadlines.
 

Federal student aid

A student’s enrollment in a study abroad program approved for credit by Carl Sandburg College or may be considered enrollment at Carl Sandburg College for the purpose of applying for assistance under the federal student aid programs. Refer to the financial aid for study abroad page.
